This three-part production, first screened 18 months ago, combined the literary talents of Sir Kingsley Amis, who won the Booker Prize with the novel, and celebrated screenwriter Andrew Davies, whose many credits have included his own A Very Peculiar Practice and the adaptation of House of Cards. They are served by a strong cast including John Stride (who became a small- screen star with The Main Chance), Bernard Hepton and Anna Cropper.
The devils in question were students together in the 1950s, now pensioners on an alcoholic wander through old age. Their routine is upset when TV personality and "professional Welshman" Alun Weaver bounds back into their lives.
