Michael Buerk presents a special report. Sickness on the Danube
The River Danube is one of Europe's biggest and most strategic waterways. It supports millions of people and a host of wildlife in eight countries before pouring into the Black Sea.
But the Danube is sick, poisoned by pollution and radioactive waste. In the Eastern Bloc it's become little more than a rubbish dump. Gaining access to environmental stories in eastern Europe has been impossible in recent years.
But Nature was able to join a floating international conference that travelled down-river examining the exploitation of the Danube and was given permission to film sensitive developments. Hungary is now considering a referendum on a huge hydro-electric scheme but can this new green glasnost save the river?
