The Oscars: Mildred Pierce

on BBC Two England

A season of films featuring the Oscar-winning performances of some of Hollywood's greatest stars.
[Starring] Joan Crawford
Also starring Jack Carson, Zachary Scott

Mildred Pierce is the kind of character Joan Crawford was to portray in many of her films - the successful business woman whose private life is dogged by unhappiness.
This particular film had been intended for Bette Davis, who refused the part; but Joan Crawford made full use of the opportunity and won an Oscar in 1945 for the Best Performance by an Actress.
