David Jessel takes up the cases of people who find themselves the victims of those institutions they thought would protect them. 1: In for a Penny
Blanche Winning is 70 years old, but she still has to work. Several years ago she was declared bankrupt when her small clothing business folded. Since then the costs of bankruptcy have tripled her debt and left her poor, lonely and frightened. Like most of the 18,000 people who go bankrupt every year, she isn't a crook - the only crime she committed was that of failing in business; and under Britain's Dickensian bankruptcy laws that can carry a life sentence.
