Opera Night: Intermezzo

on BBC Two England

Glyndebourne presents the opera by Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss and his wife Pauline had a tempestuous but nevertheless close and loving marriage that lasted 55 years until Strauss died in 1949. Their relationship is portrayed in this delightful opera which ranges from comic melodrama to passionate ecstasy and the central incident of the opera is based on an event which actually occurred.
London Philharmonic Orchestra, leader David Nolan, conductor Gustav Kuhn

(For the best effect, viewers with stereo Radio 3 should turn off TV sound and position their speakers on either side of the screen, but a few feet away. Stereo headphones are an alternative.)
