An Evening with the Royal Danish Ballet live from The Royal Theatre, Copenhagen
The Royal Danish Ballet has an unbroken tradition going back to the second half of the 18th century. In tonight's programme, they present ballets by three of their most famous ballet masters.
The first ballet is by AUGUST BOURNONVILLE, ballet master 1830-1877 The Conservatory (The Dancing School)
A re-creation of a ballet class in a Paris dancing school of the 1820s. Ballet Master Flemming Ryberg Pupils Annemarie Dybdal, Linda Hindberg , and artists of the ROYAL DANISH BALLET
During the interval, a documentary film Not Only for Pleasure tells the history of the Royal Theatre at 8.45* The Miraculous Mandarin Choreographed by the Company's present director FLEMMING FLINDT in 1967, it uses BELA BARTOK 'S famous score of the same name. The ballet tells the story of three ruffians who force a prostitute to rob her customers. A Mandarin appears and they try to kill him, but he cannot die until the young girl finally submits to his desire.
In The Spirit of the Rose
A film that tells the story of ballet in Denmark at 9.55* Etudes
Choreographed by HARALD LANDER in 1948, it starts with a demonstration of basic ballet positions and ends with the company in a dazzling display of dance technique. The soloists Mette Henningen Ib Andersen , Niels Kehlet
