As part of an escape attempt Red Fletcher leads a group of fellow convicts in a successful takeover of the isolation block of a State Penitentiary. The situation is complicated by the need to hold several guards hostage - and to restrain the homicidal tendencies of an unbalanced prisoner. Moreover, co-leader Cully is unwilling to be involved when a riot erupts, in this tough drama based on an actual incident and shot on location in the Arizona State Prison.
