Milestones of the Film

on BBC Two England

A new season of classic films which have influenced the development of world cinema. Miracle in Milan starring Francesco Golisano, Brunella Bovo, Emma Gramatica
Toto, an orphan, has been brought up by the saintly Lollota to be generous and good. When he arrives in Milan he is shocked by the misery and hopelessness of the city's down-and-outs and soon becomes their leader in a struggle against poverty and oppression. But a miracle is needed if they are to succeed.
De Sica's moving fantasy shows once again his deep feeling of compassion for the poor, a feeling also much in evidence in such realistic stories as Shoeshine and Bicycle Thieves.
Screenplay by CESARE ZAVATTINI and VITTORIO DE SICA from the novel Toto il Buono by CESARE ZAVATTINI
