Thirty-Minute Theatre: Cross Examine

on BBC Two England

by John Foster
Cast in order of appearance:
John Breslin as Thompson, Jean Marsh as Alex, Robert MacLeod as Neale, Garfield Morgan as Wolfe, Tenniel Evans as Baker, Mary Webster as Lyn

The interview of Professor Michael Thompson has been designed by a TV current affairs programme as a piece of systematic destruction of a public figure. But it turns out differently. Thompson skilfully uses the programme as a platform for his controversial ideas, and, as a result, the TV company's switchboard is jammed with protests from irate viewers and reporters seeking a good knocking story. Wolfe, the programme's editor, is furious at the interviewer's failure. Viewers, he points out, only like success. It is like a Roman circus - the more blood seen to be spilt, the higher the ratings. That is why viewers should never see what goes on behind the screen, as Thirty-Minute Theatre shows you tonight.
