Horizon

on BBC Two England

Helike- the Real Atlantis. In 373 BC, a huge earthquake and seismic sea wave destroyed and submerged the Greek city of Helike. Its remains have proved as elusive as those of Atlantis, whose myth the catastrophe may have inspired. Armed with new geological evidence, archaeologists believe they have solved the scientific detective story and have found traces of what may prove a Greek Pompeii: a frozen moment of life from the height of classical civilisation.
