Jan de Hartog's story concerns a young doctor (Rock Hudson), determined to conquer leprosy in the remote areas of Java where he has been assigned to complete his government medical service.
He hopes to bring to the world the knowledge of the world's greatest authority on the disease - Dr Brits Jansen (played by Burl Ives) - but it is a disturbing challenge, for Jansen has for years remained a recluse in a remote jungle outpost.
