Serfs

on BBC Two England

A season of films from China starring Wongdui, Padmayangje
This dramatic story of a Tibetan serf and his eventual triumph over the man who enslaved him might be a medieval melodrama, with its ' living-Buddha ' secretly raising a private army. In fact, the film is set in the 1950s and the leading actor's own life closely resembled that of the serf he plays.
