The Lively Arts

on BBC Two England

Walton No 1
' An amazing symphony to have been written in Britain.'
Andre Previn on Walton's First Symphony, one of the landmarks in British music which, 40 years after its composition, still poses daunting problems in performance. To mark Walton's 75th birthday last year Omnibus invited PREVIN to talk with HUMPHREY BURTON about the music, and rehearse it with the London Symphony Orchestra for a complete performance in The Lively Arts.
Tonight, a chance to see both rehearsal and performance in one programme, including comments from Sir William himself filmed at his home in Ischia.
When the programmes were first Shown EDWARD GREENFIELD wrote in The Guardian: ' For many years I have been longing for the television people really to get to grips with a Previn rehearsal, not just to show the icing on the cake but to present without apology the toughness and humour of a unique relationship. This is what happens.'
