The Battle for Britain's Soul

on BBC Two England

4/4. War. With the bloody conflict between royalists and republicans at its core, the English Civil War also compelled the nation to make a choice between a ritualistic religious society and a no-frills form of Protestantism. The result was the first - and last - religious government, led by Oliver Cromwell , who saw himself as an Old Testament prophet. The Rev Peter Owen-Jones recalls the tumult of war, the execution of Charles I and the aftermath of the Cromwell's reign in the last of the series.
