One Hundred Great Paintings

on BBC Two England

The first of 15 programmes
This week's subject is Children Egon Schiele (1890-1918)
Woman with Two Children at the Osterreichisches Museum, Vienna. As might be expected of an artist of a generation discovering Freud and the human unconscious, the chronic agitation and despair running through Schiele's work is derived partly from his relationship with a mother who seemed entirely lacking in either sympathy or understanding.
