The Battle for Ideas

on BBC Two England

Third of a six-part series in which political gurus take part in a studio debate on their different ideas for the future. Tonight, American professor
Amitai Etzioni explains his belief that a sense of community must replace a modern trend towards selfishness. In his first appearance on British television, Professor Etzioni argues that fragmentingfamilies and desolate inner cities are the result of placingthe needs of the individual before the community. He claims the sense of duty and obligation towards each other has been lost, and that people demand rights and yet refuse to accept the reponsibilities that go with them.
Etzioni's communitarian movement is said to be an influence on political leaders from President Clinton to
Chancellor Kohl and Tony Blair. Joining the debate are Professor Alan Ryan and the programme's host, political commentator Andrew Marr.
