This is the story of a 400-mile river journey into the wilds of Canada to explore the legend of a sombre valley where, since the early days of this century, a succession of prospectors and explorers have met their deaths. Many of the bodies were eventually found with their heads wrenched off.
The members of the expedition are almost as colourful as the legend they are exploring. Their leader is a hyphenated baronet, Captain Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, professional explorer; and the party includes Police Constable Ben Usher, lifeboatman and lifesaver from Bridlington, Yorkshire.
