Fifty miles north of Frankfurt the people who watched the ' economic miracle' from the sidelines - the farmers - struggle to maintain the integrity of village life. Eighty per cent of farm holdings are under 50 acres and most of the farms centre on the family.
There are very few agricultural employees.
