See Hear

Series 34

Episode 7

Duration: 29 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Two HDLatest broadcast: on BBC Two Northern Ireland

Several years ago, Trading Standards officers visited a quiet residential address in Manchester investigating the sale of counterfeit goods. They found a young deaf woman living in the cellar without sign language or speech. She had been imprisoned there for over 10 years against her will. See Hear investigates what happened on that day, and speaks to experts about the reasons why it happened.

The programme also commemorates the achievements of former See Hear series editor and British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust chief executive Terry Riley. He reflects on several decades of campaigning for the British Deaf Association, producing deaf television, being awarded the OBE, and battling his toughest foe yet - cancer. Show less
