After the death of her mother, Louise, a divorced schoolteacher, moves to a new life in the town of Annecy. There she meets Luigi, a young Italian who is reduced to begging in the street. Luigi accepts her help gratefully and soon becomes her lover, but while Louise tries hard to remain detached, it is not long before the affair is out of her control.
