Giles and Sue Live the Good Life

Episode 3: Good Fortune

Duration: 1 hour

First broadcast: on BBC HDLatest broadcast: on BBC One Wales

In celebration of The Good Life's 35th birthday, Giles Coren and Sue Perkins step back in time to 1975 to find out what it takes to make the self-sufficient dream a reality. Based in an ordinary suburban street and inspiring themselves with archive clips of the comedy, Giles and Sue try to recreate the Goods' world - from growing vegetables in the garden to trying to generate their own power and making their own clothes.

As Giles and Sue near the end of their Good Life 1970s adventure, they begin to question whether a self-sufficient lifestyle really is sustainable in suburbia when, at the very least, you can't dodge the bills. They explore ways to make or save money, flogging their homegrown veg to the neighbours and seeking expert help from energy boffin Monty Jopson who shows them different ways to generate power.

They try their hand at making candles from pig fat and turn their rotavator in to a road worthy vehicle of sorts. The live or die debate continues with Giles inviting a master butcher over to help work out how much money they turned the pigs in to bacon, while Sue trains Perky up to compete at the annual Kent County Agricultural Show and prove to Giles that their pets are worth more alive!

As their suburban adventure comes to a close, they reflect on how far self-sufficiency and the grow your own phenomenon has become mainstream and whether or not they could ever live the Good Life for real. Show less
