The Real Monarch of the Glen

Episode 6: Moose on a Plane

Duration: 29 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Two ScotlandLatest broadcast: on BBC Two Wales (Analogue)

Alladale estate's general manager Hugh Fullerton-Smith works on masterminding the 500 acre fenced enclosure, which will be home to the animals that Paul brings back to his Highland estate. So far, the only residents are a handful of wild pigs, but Hugh is off to Sweden to collect the next arrivals - two moose.

The traditional pursuit of stalking is still the biggest money-spinner for the estate. David takes the last stalkers of the season up to the West end of the reserve. Paul travels to Argentina to meet Kris and Doug Tompkins, who run the world's largest re-wilding project. Paul meets a giant anteater who is about to be released. When Kris and Doug return each parcel of land to wilderness, they hand it to the government as a National Park.

With foot and mouth and blue tongue finally under control, the moose have their visas to fly to Scotland. The moose are growing so fast the plane has to be specially customised. They are sedated for the journey, but one wakes en route, eager to stretch its legs. At 30,000 feet, there's a desperate struggle to keep them in the rear of the plane. The moose finally arrive at Alladale in the finest Highland rain.

The re-wilding dream lives on. Above all, Paul is still optimistic. Show less
