Film International: Le cheval d'orgueil

on BBC Two England

starring Jacques Dufilho Bernadette Lesache Francois Cluzet
1908. As ' Petit-Pierre ' grows up in rural Brittany he becomes aware of the myths and rituals that govern village life. For some, the poverty and misery are literally more than they can bear, but Pierre's family hold on to their ' horse of pride ', which also carries them through the conflict between their culture and the government's attempts to make them Frenchmen rather than Bretons.
Pierre-Jakez Helias ' autobiographical bestseller is an unusual subject for Claude Chabrol , better known for his films of contemporary middle-class life distorted by passion and murder.
