The second of an occasional series about the arts in the other countries of the Common Market.
The past 20 years have transformed the Netherlands from a rural to a highly industrialised society, and yet some of the older attitudes remain.
These contrasts are very much part of Dutch life today. Traditionally interested in painting and music, the Dutch now have a variety of cultural opportunity out of all proportion to the size of the population. This programme looks at opera, ballet, theatre and television, and also at everyday life and the alternative society.
Among those appearing are:
Edo de Waart, conductor
J.B. Bakema, architect
Bert Haanstra, film maker
Vincent van Gogh, nephew of the artist
Commentary spoken by John Stockbridge
