Travellers in Time

on BBC Two England

Films of early exploration introduced by Duncan Carse
King of the Sun (1934)
This film tells, with the help of the original 1930s soundtrack, the story of one stage of an American round-the-world expedition, ending in Abyssinia with a meeting with the Emperor-'King of the Sun'.
The film starts with the arrival in Colombo, amidst snake-charmers and elephants: travels by superb sailing yacht to the Middle East, up the Red Sea to Jedda; and finally to Addis Ababa, to meet the Emperor and witness the mustering of his army of 50,000 men, and their grand charge; a charge in which both the expedition s cameras are smashed and the film ends....
