Great Zoos of the world
A grand tour of some of the outstanding European and American zoos with Anthony Smith
West Berlin
Germany's oldest zoo
Set in a quiet park not far from the Brandenburg Gate and within a mile of the Berlin Wall, this is a zoo of contrasts-a place where it's not the roar of lions that attracts attention but the sound of pneumatic drills rebuilding a zoo almost totally destroyed twenty-five years ago. But despite the bombing, despite political difficulties, air corridors, and transport problems-food has to be brought some 200 miles from West Germany to keep the animals alive-the zoo has fully regained its international reputation and has the largest animal collection in Europe.
