Deciding their fate are the pianists Ronan O'Hora ,
Julius Drake and Margaret Fingerhut , together with resident jurors
Alun Hoddinott and Edward Gregson.
Humphrey Burton sets the scene and Mervyn Williams meets the performers at their schools and homes.
