Mike Gatting's team earned a small fortune by touring South Africa this winter.

Branded as mercenaries and banned from Test cricket, they said they were professional sportsmen who knew very little about apartheid. With South Africa teetering on the brink of a vast social and political upheaval the tour had to be stopped. Many would say it should never have started.

Michael Cockerell reports on their painful learning experience and offers a unique view of cricket behind barbed wire.
