Ecuador, one of the most beautiful countries in Amazonia, faces a classic third world dilemma. As one of the poorest countries in Latin
America, it is forced to exploit many of its natural resources to the cost of the environment.
If deforestation continues at its present rate, within 40 years the forests will have disappeared, taking with them plants that could hold the cure for many of the world's diseases. Ian Breach , the BBC's environment correspondent, reports on a country attempting to balance development and conservation. Producer Helen Cramer
