In 1869 John Wesley Powell became the first man to navigate the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River.
A hundred years later a dozen of the world's top canoeists, backed by three rescue rafts, retraced Powell's voyage into uncertainty; at the bottom of a chasm over a mile deep, they too risked their lives amid the 20-ft waves, vast whirlpools, and giant rapids of one of the most powerful rivers in the world.
Winner of First Prize in the Rank Newsreel Documentary Awards for 1970.
