On the Rails, Off the Rails Linda Kitson , war-artist in the Falklands, takes a train and a sketch-pad across
Canada -just 100 years after her great-great grandfather (later to become Lord
Strathcona) hammered the last spike into the last sleeper on the coast-to-coast Canadian Pacific Railway.
In the course of her 3,000-mile journey Linda copes with a derailment, a blizzard and the awkward and multifarious requirements of a film crew. She traverses the wilderness, the prairies and the mountains; along the way she meets gospel singers, refugees, cowboys, train-buffs and, of course, the ordinary people of Canada.
'A wonderful journey,' says Linda, 'so many miles, so many surprises.'
