While he is drowning his marital problems in drink one evening, Assistant District Attorney Cleve Marshall encounters Thelma Jordon, the attractive niece of a wealthy eccentric. He falls in love with her but when Thelma's aunt is killed, Cleve suddenly finds that he has to risk his career, family and reputation to save her from a charge of murder.
