on BBC Two England

A new film of the famous operetta Die Csdrddsfiirstin
Music by EMMERICH KALMAN
Libretto by L. STEIN and B. JENBACH Set in Budapest and Vienna during the closing period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this is the story of a beautiful cabaret star called Sylva Varescu. The operetta opens at her farewell concert in Budapest, where she has earned the nickname 'The Czardas Princess' in honour of her expertise in singing the fiery rhythms of the Hungarian Czardas dance. Sylva is off to tour America, but Prince Edwin von Lippert-Weylersheim, asks her to stay and marry him instead. Edwin's step-mother wants him to marry his cousin, Countess Stasi, and goes to great lengths to break up his unsuitable relationship with Sylva.
