A French film with English sub-titles starring Gerard Philipe, Francoise Rosay

An elderly and wealthy woman gambles away a fortune while her family and their debtors look on despairingly. Dostoevsky's novel received another production on BBC-2 earlier this year, and it is interesting to compare that version with this film which was made by the French director Claude Autant-Lara. Gerard Philipe, who plays a leading role, previously worked with Autant-Lara on Le Diable au Corps.
