Young Musician of the Year

on BBC Two England

Concerto Final
The 1992 competition reaches its climax as the winners from the four class finals shown last week - piano, woodwind, brass and strings - compete together in the grand final. Each will play a concerto, accompanied by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, conducted by Christopher Seaman.
The music to be performed tonight by the young finalists must remain a secret until the last minute, but executive producer Roy Tipping says that "two of the concertos are popular repertory pieces.
Another is a classical rarity. And the fourth is by a British composer best known for his brass-band music."
The jury includes
Sir Denis Forman , former chairman of Granada Television, composer Alun Hoddinott , opera singer
Joan Rodgers and pianist Cecile Ousset , as well as specialists in the finalists' own instruments. The final is held in the Royal
Concert Hall in Glasgow in the presence of HRH the Duchess of Kent, and is presented by Humphrey Burton. Paul Daniel , the musical director of Opera North, will be on hand with expert comments.
As well as the four concerto performances, there will be documentary coverage of the Young Composer Award, which was given for the first time this year. Also featured will be the winning designs from the Fashion Challenge to design performance wear for the four Young Musician finalists. Director Knss Rusmanis
