On hearing that his son Jolly has enlisted, Jolyon returns home from Paris. At Timothy's house on the Bayswater Road the enlistment of Jolly Dartie and Val Dartie is heavily discussed. Timothy himself makes a rare appearance. Soames arranges a meeting with Jolyon, asking him to use his influence with Irene and persuade her to let bygones be bygones.
