Jack Fletcher arrives with his dog at a remote village in the north of medieval England. The people will have little to do with him and tell him to move on. But Jack decides to stay. How can this perverse and overwrought man contrive to establish himself against all the odds? And may the effects of his solitude not end by turning against him?
