The fourth of seven Chronicle films If it's not old, it can't be historic - or can it? The demolition of the Firestone factory last year caused a major public uproar and a new list of protected buildings of architectural and historic merit which for the first time were drawn from the 20th century. Many of these buildings, like the late-lamented Firestone, were constructed for industry.
Kenneth Hudson investigates the major industrial revolution which they represent, a revolution which far outscales that of any previous epoch and which, for anyone looking for its monuments, is almost over.
