The Farewell Gala 7.30pm BBC2
Before it closes its doors for refurbishment tomorrow for at least two and a half years, the Royal Opera House is putting on a lavish gala performance, which will be broadcast live tonight. Split between opera and ballet, the surprise concert will feature productions that have been associated with the theatre over the past 50 years. The ballets will include La Valse and Manon and The Sleeping Beauty, while the operatic excerpts range from Peter Grimes to Verdi and Strauss. The organisers are promising a star-studded occasion with Placido Domingo and Sylvie Guillem among the stars who will be appearing.
