Violence and shouting; waving placards and charging police-horses; headlines and loud hailers: the academic life sometimes seems more like a running riot. Puzzled parents, resentful taxpayers, worried university staff, and sixth-formers uncertainly facing an undergraduate future which may contain as many sit-downs as seminars. We hear the roar of student unrest, but does the noise make sense? Are there any words to listen to? What should a university education mean in 1969?
