The third of six programmes recorded at the Royal Festival Hall, London marking the appointment of Andre Previn as Music Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Brahms Double Concerto with Salvatore Accardo (violin) Anne Martindale Williams (cello)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra leader BARRY GRIFFITHS conducted by Andre Previn
In his introductory essay, Previn says: 'The best concertos are often symphonic by nature, and this composition combines characteristics of concerto, chamber-music and symphony, displaying all the assurance of a mastercraftsman. The range of the violin plus the added sonority of the cello gives Brahms a particularly warm palette of tone-colours. This concerto was the last orchestral piece that Brahms wrote, yet it's expansive and rhapsodic as well as being gloriously integrated.'
