An Open Door programme made by members of the Claimants and Unemployed Workers Union.
' One 53-year-old chap had suffered two strokes, was partially paralysed and had lost his speech. He was given a four-minute medical by a DHSS medical officer who said he was " Fit for work provided he doesn't have to walk, lift, bend or carry, and doesn't have to talk to people". The poor chap was forced to register for work and his invalidity benefit stopped as a result.'
There are half-a-million people like that, disabled or chronically sick, declared fit for work which, even if it existed, they are not qualified to do. Many live in poverty as a result. It's for these people Joe Kenyon 's Claimants Union is working.
