' ... I left the city of Granada on the 12th day of May, in the same year of 1492, being Saturday, and came to the town of Palos which is a seaport: where I equipped three vessels well suited for such service : and departed from that port well supplied with provisions and with many sailors.....'
This is a translation of part of a letter written by Christopher Columbus to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain when he set out to cross the Atlantic.
Todiy listeners will hear of his discovery of a ' new world ' and what this was to mean to the ' old world'.
