Black and White in Colour: Television, Memory, Race, 1936-68

on BBC Two England

The start of a short season celebrating the contribution of black and Asian people to TV. Presented by Meera Syal.

The first of two documentaries directed by Isaac Julien, who won the Critics' Prize at Cannes last year for "Young Soul Rebels". He comments: "Combining these documentaries with complete archive shows poses an overall question about black people on TV - have the images broadcast over the last 40 years been portrayal or betrayal?" Tonight's film combines archive clips with the stories of performers like Carmen Munroe and Cy Grant, and Britain's first black agent Pearl Connor.
Narrated by Professor Stuart Hall.
