Jazz Notes

on BBC Radio 3

It is 40 years this week since the death of singer Billie Holiday. In the first of two programmes Alyn Shipton is joined by Holiday biographer John Chilton to look back at her career and her extraordinary rise to fame. In rare archive recordings she is also remembered by her colleagues Teddy Wilson , Al Casey and Doc Cheatham , who recall her professionalism in the studio and her stand against racism.
