The Golden State
Donny MacLeod arrives in California, traditionally the land of plenty even by American standards. But he finds a new and unfamiliar concern in the air. The Golden State is feeling the pinch of inflation. How are the Californians facing this shock to their hitherto freewheeling, free-spending lifestyle?
With typical resourcefulness they are forming co-operative food markets, groups of friends and neighbours buying direct from local farmers and cutting out the gigantic supermarkets which they say are becoming the dinosaurs of their society.
