Gaucho
The gaucho is Argentina's version of the cowboy. But while the cowboy of North American legend disappeared long ago, in some parts of Argentina the gaucho remains very much as he always was: tough, proud, independent, with his own half-savage code of conduct.
On a cattle ranch in the remote north-eastern province of Corrientes, the gaucho has changed least of all. He dresses like the gauchos of 100 years ago and retains old customs and skills at horse-breaking and cattle-herding.
Four hundred miles to the south, near the big city of Buenos Aires, the gaucho cult has become sophisticated and self-conscious. Narrator JORGE DURRIEU
