7.40 Western Front: Making the Front
The first of six films in which Professor Richard Holmes examines how the First World War was fought.
Holmes follows the route taken between August and December 1914 by the 100,000 men of the British Expeditionary Force as they went to fight the Germans in France. At first it was a war of movement, but, by Christmas, the Great War was bogged down in the trenches.
