When a workman is sacked by the owner of a Northern engineering company, his fellow workers call a strike. In desperation the boss tells the men to run the factory themselves - an idea they happily accept. Despite some revolutionary equipment and a new-found enthusiasm for their work, problems arise at shop floor and the 'new management' level. Bernard Miles 's film remains one of the liveliest and most honest films of the post-war years, still remarkable for its topicality.
