DreamingofDemocracy. In Algeria's first multi-party elections since independence held last December, Islamic fundamentalists looked set to gain power and create Africa's second Islamic state. But on 12 January the army launched a pre-emptive military coup. In June, the newly appointed president, Mohamed Boudiaf , was assassinated.
